How Moms Can Draw Near to God Again: A Gentle Guide for a Deeper Walk With Jesus

Motherhood is beautiful. It is full of joy, wonder, and love. But it is also stretching. Tiring. Overwhelming.

Somewhere between diaper changes, school runs, endless lists, and sleepless nights, your heart can feel far from God. You may still love Him, still desire Him, still long for His presence—but the noise, the responsibilities, and the weight of life can make His voice seem faint.

When Christmas Resentment Sets In - For The Mom Who Feels Like She is Doing It All by Herself

For many of us, it shows up quietly.
You plan. You organize. You remember. You buy. You wrap. You host.
And everyone else shows up and enjoys the magic.
Over time, that burden turns into resentment.

Not because your family is bad.
But because you have always stepped up, so others learned to step back.

Let’s be honest: mornings can feel like a battlefield and evenings like a marathon. Between waking kids up, packing lunches, managing drop-offs, tackling homework, and getting everyone to bed on time, the school year can feel like one long race.

But here’s the good news—routines don’t have to be stressful. With the right systems in place, you can create school-day rhythms that bring calm instead of chaos. And yes, it’s possible even in a busy household with multiple kids, packed schedules, and unexpected interruptions.

Anchor Your Day with Consistent Wake & Bedtimes

Sleep is non-negotiable for kids’ learning and moms’ sanity. Choose a bedtime that ensures your children get enough rest for their age, and stick to it—even on weekends when possible. A consistent wake time also makes mornings smoother because bodies adjust to the rhythm.

✨ Pro Tip: Create a gentle bedtime ritual (reading, prayer, dimmed lights) that signals it’s time to wind down.

⸻

2. Prep the Night Before

Reduce morning stress by moving the work to the evening:
•Lay out clothes
•Pack school bags
•Prep lunches or at least the non-perishables
•Write out a quick family checklist

This small shift transforms chaotic mornings into calm starts.

⸻

3. Use “Micro-Routines” for Key Transitions

Instead of one massive routine, break the day into small repeatable steps:
•Morning Routine: Wash face, brush teeth, get dressed, breakfast, grab backpack.
•After-School Routine: Snack, 30-minute play, homework, family dinner.
•Evening Routine: Tidy up, shower, reading, prayer, bed.

Children thrive on predictability—it makes them feel safe and reduces pushback.

⸻

4. Simplify Your Commitments

Over-scheduling is one of the biggest stress traps for families. Limit after-school activities to what your kids truly enjoy or what aligns with your family’s priorities. Protect evenings for family connection and downtime.

⸻

5. Infuse Routines with Connection, Not Just Tasks

Routines aren’t only about efficiency; they’re about relationship. Pray with your kids on the way to school. Share highs and lows of the day at dinner. Speak a blessing over them at bedtime. These moments transform routines into anchors of love and faith.

Routines aren’t about rigid control—they’re about creating an environment where your family can thrive without the constant weight of stress. By anchoring your days with predictability, simplicity, and God’s peace, you set your children (and yourself!) up for success.

And remember: a peaceful rhythm at home doesn’t come from perfection, but from consistency wrapped in grace.

Ready to live the overwhelm free life?

The Back To School resources will equip you with practical strategies to build sustainable rhythms, reduce overwhelm, and support your child’s academic success while protecting your own peace.

Join us here: familiesarising.org/backtoschool

Learn More About Our Back To School Series Here

But here’s the truth: your home sets the emotional tone for your children. When your space is peaceful, your family thrives. When it’s chaotic, everyone feels the stress. As Christian moms, we’re not only managing logistics—we’re also stewarding the spiritual and emotional climate of our homes.

Here are five simple but powerful ways to do it.

1. Start the Day with God’s Presence

Before the rush begins, carve out a short family devotion or prayer. Even five minutes of Scripture and gratitude shifts the atmosphere. It sets the tone for your children’s day and reminds them (and you) that God is in control, not the calendar.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” – Isaiah 26:3

⸻

2. Declutter the Spaces That Matter Most

Clutter adds to mental stress. Focus on high-traffic areas like the entryway, kitchen table, and homework space. A tidy environment communicates calm, giving everyone a sense of order in the middle of a busy school week.

⸻

3. Create a Calm After-School Ritual

The moment kids walk in from school can set the emotional climate for the rest of the day. Instead of rushing straight into homework or chores, create a ritual of decompression: a snack, a hug, 10 minutes of quiet play, or even soft background music. This transition helps kids release school stress before diving into home responsibilities.

⸻

4. Guard the Evenings from Over-Scheduling

A jam-packed evening schedule leaves no room for family connection. Choose wisely which activities truly serve your child’s growth and which simply add noise. Protect at least 2–3 nights a week for family dinners, games, or unstructured rest.

⸻

5. Speak Life Into Your Home

Words carry atmosphere. Replace constant correction with encouragement. Celebrate small wins, speak Scripture into everyday situations, and model grace when mistakes happen. Your children will learn that peace isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence, patience, and love.

Encouragement for Moms

Your home doesn’t need to look like a Pinterest board to feel peaceful. Peace is cultivated by small, consistent choices—inviting God in, simplifying routines, protecting rest, and choosing words that build up instead of tear down.

As you head deeper into this school year, remember: you are not only raising children, you are shaping the spiritual and emotional culture of your family. And with God’s wisdom, that culture can be one of peace.

⸻

✨ Want more? Build Morning Rhythms, Not Routines

Instead of overloading mornings with rigid to-do lists, create rhythms that flow—like prayer, a quick stretch, or reading Scripture together. A rhythm is flexible, allowing for grace on tough days, while still keeping everyone grounded.

2. Protect Your Sleep Like Treasure

A well-rested mom is a present mom. Set a bedtime alarm to remind yourself to shut down phones, laptops, and endless scrolling. Quality rest strengthens your ability to parent with patience and clarity.

3. Don’t Do It Alone

Burnout thrives in isolation. Connect with other moms—through school WhatsApp groups, your church community, or a trusted online support network. Share the load, swap ideas, and remind one another: you’re not alone in this journey.

4. Create a Weekly Reset Ritual

Pick one day a week (Sunday evening works well!) to review schedules, prep meals, pray over the week, and reset your space. This helps you go into Monday with peace instead of panic.

5. Teach Kids to Carry Their Share

You’re not a one-woman show! Involve your kids in age-appropriate chores, packing lunches, or setting up their school clothes. Not only does this lighten your load, but it also builds their responsibility.

6. Anchor in Daily Prayer Breaks

Even a 3-minute pause at lunchtime can reset your spirit. Whisper a Scripture, breathe deeply, and invite God’s peace back into your heart. Prayer isn’t one more thing on your list—it’s the fuel that carries you through.

7. Embrace Imperfection

Some days will be messy. Dinner might be cereal. Homework might be half-done. Instead of spiraling, practice grace. Excitement, anticipation, and yes—stress.

For many moms, back-to-school season can trigger burnout before September even ends. But here’s the truth: God doesn’t want you to live drained. He wants you to walk in peace, strength, and joy as you lead your family well.

Let’s look at 7 signs of mom burnout—and how to restore your peace whether you’re just starting or already weeks into the school year.

1. Constant Exhaustion

•If school has already started: You may feel like you haven’t caught your breath since day one—early mornings, drop-offs, homework, and sports schedules add up quickly.
•If school hasn’t started yet: The prep itself (supplies, clothes, new routines) may already be draining you before the first bell rings.

? Peace Reset: Anchor your mornings in prayer and Scripture before the day unfolds. Ten minutes of stillness with God can set the tone for peace.

2. Irritability Over Small Things

•For moms already in school mode: You may find yourself snapping at kids over homework or bedtime.
•For those preparing: The “to-do list pressure” may make you short-tempered with your family.

? Peace Reset: When irritation rises, pause. Step away, breathe deeply, and invite the Holy Spirit to fill you with patience.

3. Brain Fog and Forgetfulness

•Already in school: You may be forgetting sign-up sheets, permission slips, or after-school pick-up times.
•Still preparing: You may feel overwhelmed trying to juggle supply lists and new routines.

? Peace Reset: Write things down. Use a family planner, whiteboard, or digital calendar so you’re not carrying everything in your head.

4. Feeling Overwhelmed by Small Tasks

Whether it’s packing lunches (daily struggle) or buying that last pair of shoes before school starts—small tasks can feel like big weights when you’re running low.

? Peace Reset: Simplify. Meal prep basics, delegate where possible, and remind yourself: done is better than perfect.

5. Loss of Joy

The excitement of the season may feel overshadowed by stress.
•If you’ve already started school: Joy may be buried under homework battles.
•If you’re preparing: Anxiety about “getting it all right” may rob your joy.

? Peace Reset: Reintroduce fun on purpose. Play worship music while you cook, plan a family movie night, or take a walk together.

6. Neglecting Your Own Needs

Burnout often shows up in skipped meals, late nights, or ignoring your own health.

? Peace Reset: Prioritize rest, hydration, and movement. Stewardship of your body is part of stewarding your family well.

7. Spiritual Dryness

•If school has started: Your devotional time may have been the first thing squeezed out.
•If you’re preparing: You may be so focused on physical preparation that spiritual preparation feels neglected.

? Peace Reset: Start small. One verse a day. Whisper a breath prayer like: “Lord, renew my strength today.”

No matter where you are in the school calendar, you don’t have to walk into this season burned out. Recognize the signs early, reset your rhythms, and remember Jesus’ invitation:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Mama, you are not alone. God has equipped you with grace for this season.

Next Steps for You

•If your school year has already started → Use these peace resets as a mid-course correction. It’s not too late to re-center your family’s rhythm.
•If you’re preparing for school → Put these into practice now to prevent burnout before the first day.

?

Have you ever wondered if you were truly hearing God—or just your own thoughts? Many of us expect God’s voice to come through dramatic signs: a booming word from heaven, a vision in the night, or a miraculous encounter.

But in my journey, I’ve learned that God often speaks in ways that are much simpler, quieter, and more consistent than we realize.

The truth is: God is always speaking. The real question is—are we listening?

The Quiet Nudges of God

When I think about hearing God, it’s not usually about dramatic encounters. Instead, it’s about:
•The small nudges in my heart.
•The gentle impressions that don’t leave me.
•The peace that settles in my spirit when I choose His way over mine.

What I’ve discovered is that hearing God clearly often comes down to surrender. Am I willing to obey His direction, even if it disrupts my plans or doesn’t make sense at the time?

For me, that looks like:
•Releasing the “my way or no way” mindset.
•Trusting His instructions even when they feel inconvenient.
•Letting go of my expectations for how things should happen.

A Real-Life Example: A Small Nudge That Saved Us Big Trouble

Not long ago, my son had registered for his driving test at a local Autopac office. Everything seemed fine. But then I felt a gentle prompting to stop by the main office. Honestly, it didn’t make sense—and my son definitely wasn’t thrilled. He thought I was just “overdoing things.”

But I couldn’t shake the nudge. So, despite the grumbling, we went. And here’s what we found: the first office had entered his email address incorrectly. If we hadn’t gone to the main office, he could have missed important communication and ended up delayed for months compared to his peers.

What felt like a small, unnecessary detour turned out to save us major stress. That’s how God’s voice often works—it feels subtle in the moment, but when you look back, you realize just how significant it was.

10 Ways God Speaks to Us

Over time, I’ve learned that God uses many channels to communicate with us. Some of the most common are:
1.His Word (the Bible) – the standard for every message.
2.The witness of the Holy Spirit – a gentle inner confirmation.
3.The peace of God – calm assurance that steadies decisions (Colossians 3:15).
4.Repetition – when the same message surfaces in multiple ways.
5.Divine “coincidences” – alignments that are too perfect to be random.
6.Wise counsel – guidance from trusted, godly people.
7.Situations and circumstances – doors opening, doors closing.
8.The still, small voice – whispers that cut through the noise.
9.Dreams and visions – insights God chooses to reveal this way.
10.Nature and creation – reminders of His presence in what He made.

God is endlessly creative in how He speaks, but one truth remains constant: His voice will never contradict His Word.

Becoming Familiar with His Voice

I once prayed a simple prayer: “Lord, speak to me in a language I understand.” I wasn’t asking about English, French, or Yoruba—I was asking Him to meet me in ways my heart could recognize. And in His kindness, He always has.

Jesus said it beautifully in John 10:4–5:

“When he gets them all out, he leads them and they follow because they are familiar with his voice. They won’t follow a stranger’s voice but will scatter because they aren’t used to the sound of it.”

The more time we spend with God, the more familiar His voice becomes. Just like sheep learn their shepherd’s sound, we grow in clarity and confidence as we walk closely with Him.

The Real Challenge: Tuning Out the Noise

Looking back, I can see that I almost missed God’s voice many times—not because He wasn’t speaking, but because I was too distracted, too hurried, or too attached to my own way of doing things.

But every time I chose to pause, surrender, and listen, I discovered He had been speaking all along.

That’s the beauty of walking with God: hearing His voice isn’t meant to be a rare, once-in-a-lifetime event. It’s meant to be the normal rhythm of our daily relationship with Him.

God Is Still Speaking

So let me leave you with this truth: Hearing God clearly is not about chasing a dramatic moment—it’s about cultivating a daily posture of listening.

He longs for His voice to be normal in our lives. And He promises to guide those who are willing to follow.

? Reflection Questions for You:
•How do you filter God’s voice from the noise in your life?
•What helps you personally recognize when He’s speaking to you?

Next Step: Grow Deeper in Hearing God’s Voice

If this resonated with you, I’d love to invite you into a community where you can grow even deeper.

? Back-to-school season is more than just supplies and schedules—it's about preparing our children to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally. And one of the most overlooked (yet most powerful) tools in your parenting toolkit? Nutrition.

Nutrition plays a powerful role in how children perform academically, behave in class, and even how their immune systems function during cold and flu season.
Prayer Is My First Response Now: Learning to Lean on God in Every Situation

As Christian moms, we know how easy it is to fall into the habit of worrying. Life’s daily demands often push us to control every situation, to fix problems as they arise, and to strive for perfection. But what happens when we can’t control the outcome or fix what’s broken? When we have to rely on God’s divine help? It can be difficult and, at times, overwhelming.

This is why Philippians 4:6 has become such a powerful reminder in my life:
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.”

The scripture is simple, but the challenge lies in truly embracing it. Everything? Yes, everything! Even the seemingly small details matter to God.

Let me share a personal story that deepened my understanding of this truth.

I searched everywhere—at home, at a friend’s restaurant—nothing. Stress started to build, and I was overwhelmed by worry.

That Saturday, I joined my church’s virtual prayer meeting. When the leader asked if anyone had prayer requests, I hesitated. My prayer request felt trivial compared to the challenges others were facing, but I felt a strong nudge to ask for prayer for my lost handbag. I shared my request, and we prayed together.

Less than an hour later, I found my bag right where I had placed it—on the hanger. I realized I had spent so much time stressing over it without praying. In that moment, I learned that prayer should be my first response, not my last resort.

Why Prayer Is My Go-To Response Now

Prayer has since become my go-to in moments of uncertainty, chaos, and fear. It’s the only thing that calms my heart and brings peace, even when the situation remains unclear. And while the answers may not always come immediately, prayer always brings me a sense of direction and clarity.

God cares about every detail of our lives. From finding a lost handbag to the bigger issues we face as Christian moms, God is deeply involved and attentive to us. If He cares for these little things, how much more does He care for our families, our children, and our hopes and dreams?

The scripture that has been transformative for me this year is:

“Unless the Lord builds a house, the builders labor in vain. Whether it's waiting for a breakthrough, an answer to prayer, or the right timing for an important decision, the waiting can feel heavy—like a wall standing between us and what we hope for. But the Bible offers a beautiful perspective on the waiting seasons, teaching us valuable lessons about patience, faith, and trust in God's timing.

Two Types of Waiting: The Waiting with Purpose and the Waiting with No End in Sight

There are two types of waiting we often experience in life:

The Waiting with an Obvious Deadline: This is the kind of waiting where we know exactly when the end will come—like waiting for a meeting or a specific event. Their experiences provide valuable lessons for us today.

Sarah waited years for God’s promise of a child. In her impatience, she took matters into her own hands by offering Hagar to Abraham. How might we handle the waiting when God’s promises seem delayed?

Noah waited for the floodwaters to recede, relying on God’s instructions rather than his own judgment to leave the ark. Do we trust God's guidance, even when circumstances seem to say otherwise?

Hannah faced mockery and despair, yet she never gave up on praying for a child. Her persistence teaches us to keep praying, even when others don’t understand.

Joseph waited in a foreign land, facing trials that seemed unfair, yet he remained faithful to God. How often do we face tests that challenge our trust in God’s timing?

David was anointed as king but spent years running for his life, waiting for God’s promise to be fulfilled. Are we willing to wait for God’s perfect timing, even when the wait is long?

Even Jesus Himself waited until He was 30 to begin His public ministry. And today, we continue to wait for the return of Christ. Waiting is not just a part of life—it’s an essential element of God’s plan.

How Should We Wait?

The Bible teaches us that how we wait is just as important as the wait itself. In the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), five were prepared with extra oil for their lamps, while the other five ran out of oil and missed the Bridegroom’s arrival. The oil represents the Holy Spirit in our lives. As we wait, we must stay spiritually prepared by keeping in step with the Holy Spirit, receiving His Word, and actively loving and obeying God.

In Habakkuk 2:3 (TLB), we’re reminded that God’s promises won’t happen right away.
Creating Sacred Moments: Finding Solitude in a Busy Household

God isn’t asking for hours of uninterrupted silence—He’s asking for your heart.
? Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Even a 30-second pause to breathe, whisper a prayer, or acknowledge God’s presence can shift your entire day.

Finding solitude can feel impossible when little hands are tugging at you, dishes are piling up, and schedules are overflowing.

But even in the middle of life’s demands, Jesus modeled the power of solitude, showing us that stillness isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity.

How Jesus Modeled Solitude in the Midst of Ministry

Jesus lived a demanding life. Instead, it’s about creating sacred moments within your daily life. Here are simple ways to do that:

✨ Wake Up 10 Minutes Earlier – Before the house wakes up, spend those first few moments in silence with God.
✨ Transform Ordinary Tasks into Sacred Moments – Washing dishes? Folding laundry? Use that time to pray or meditate on Scripture.
✨ Practice the "Pause & Breathe" Method – Before reacting to the next chaotic moment, pause for 5 deep breaths, whisper a prayer, and reset.
✨ Step Outside for a 5-Minute Reset – Fresh air and a quiet heart can make a world of difference.
✨ Utilize Nap Time or Quiet Time – Instead of filling every moment with tasks, carve out a few minutes just for God.
✨ Create a “Sacred Space” – A simple chair, a candle, or a journal can turn an ordinary spot into your personal sanctuary.
✨ Teach Your Kids the Value of Quiet Moments – Show them that silence isn’t empty—it’s an invitation to hear from God.

Small, Intentional Pauses Can Deepen Your Connection with God

God isn’t asking for hours of uninterrupted silence—He’s asking for your heart.
?
Overcoming Guilt and Distractions: Giving Yourself Permission to Rest

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

For many moms, rest feels like an impossible luxury. There’s always something to do—laundry to fold, meals to cook, homework to check, and work deadlines to meet. When we do take a moment to breathe, guilt creeps in, whispering, “You should be doing more.” But what if rest isn’t a sign of laziness? What if it’s actually an act of obedience to God?

The Power of Silence: Why Moms Need Stillness in the Chaos

Motherhood is a beautiful, life-giving journey, but let’s be honest—it can also be exhausting and overwhelming. From the moment we wake up, our minds are filled with a never-ending to-do list: preparing meals, managing school drop-offs, handling work responsibilities, and keeping the household running smoothly. With so many demands, finding time for stillness can seem impossible.

But what if the very thing we feel we don’t have time for—silence and solitude—is the key to restoring our energy, deepening our faith, and strengthening our ability to parent with wisdom and grace?

In this post, we’ll explore why food is so important to our Christmas celebrations and how it helps us stay connected to our culture, faith, and family—even when we’re miles away.

Why Food is Everything at Christmas

Let’s be honest: when we think of Christmas, we think of the food. For Nigerians, Christmas dinner isn’t just a meal—it’s an event! From the first pot of Jollof Rice to the last bite of small chops, food is at the heart of every family gathering. It’s about more than just eating; it’s about sharing, bonding, and celebrating life.

Some of our favorite Christmas foods include:

Jollof Rice – You can’t have a Nigerian Christmas without Jollof. It’s the star of the show, and every family has their own special way of making it.

Goat Meat Pepper Soup – Spicy, warming, and the perfect dish to enjoy with loved ones. It’s like a hug in a bowl!

Pounded Yam and Egusi Soup – If there’s one dish that screams "family celebration," it’s this one. Thick, comforting, and full of flavor.

Small Chops – These bite-sized snacks (spring rolls, puff-puff, samosas) are the unofficial “party food” of Christmas. You can’t go wrong!

These dishes are more than just food—they’re the essence of Christmas. They remind us of home, of family, and of all the things that make the holiday season so special.

Missing Home? Let the Food Bring You Back

Living in a new country can sometimes leave you feeling disconnected, especially during Christmas. The Christmas decorations are different, the weather is colder, and (let’s be honest) the food just doesn’t taste the same. But food has a magical way of bringing you back to your roots.
When you cook or share the meals you grew up with, you're not just satisfying your hunger—you’re also satisfying your heart. The smell of Jollof Rice or the taste of pepper soup can make you feel like you’re back in your family’s kitchen, surrounded by laughter and love.
And let’s not forget, food is a way to share your culture with new friends. If you’re living in a multicultural area, sharing your holiday dishes with others can be a fun way to introduce them to the beauty of Nigerian cuisine—and what better way to spread joy than through a delicious plate of food?

Christmas Recipes with a Twist

Now for the fun part—some recipes with a twist! We’re going to keep the heart and flavor of Nigerian Christmas dishes, but give them a little something extra. These are perfect for making your holiday meals feel extra special, no matter where you are.

Jollof Rice with a Caribbean Twist – Let’s get tropical! Add a bit of coconut milk to your Jollof for a creamy, island-inspired flavor that’s perfect for the season.

Plantain and Bean Salad – This is a lighter, refreshing option to balance out all those rich dishes. Combine sweet plantains with black beans and some zesty dressing for a salad that’s both healthy and delicious.

Goat Meat Pepper Soup with Ginger and Lemongrass – Give your classic pepper soup an Asian twist by adding ginger and lemongrass. It adds a fresh, aromatic zing that’s just perfect for the cold weather.

These recipes let you enjoy the flavors of home while experimenting with new ingredients that are available in your new country. Plus, they’re a fun way to share your culture in a way that feels fresh and exciting!

Why It’s Important to Hold on to Food Traditions

Christmas food is more than just a way to fill your stomach—it’s a way to hold onto your heritage, your faith, and the things that make you feel close to home. When you’re far from your family, food becomes a powerful way to keep those traditions alive.

Cooking the meals you grew up with reminds you that no matter how far you are from home, your culture and faith go with you. Every bite is a reminder that, while you may be in a different place, you’re still connected to where you came from and the people you love.

And let’s not forget: Christmas is about love. Sharing a meal, whether it’s with your family or new friends, is one of the best ways to show that love.

Bring the Flavors of Home to Your Christmas

This Christmas, why not let food be your bridge to home?
